MALE VOICE: Obesity is a multi - - disease. It involves environment, it involves genetics and it involves social economics. Speaking about the environment, we have a - - of high calorie, fast, easy to get food and food choices available to use through society. People these days, unfortunately, tend to eat out more than they are eating in and that leads to higher calorie intake. Additionally, we are not hard labors anymore. We tend to work jobs that are relatively inactive. We are not burning a lot of calories in our daily lives. Therefore, higher calorie intake and less calories burned means excess which turns to overweight.
There’s also a genetic factor. I have a cousin who is morbidly obese. She has a husband who is morbidly obese and her two natural born children and morbidly obese. She has an adopted child, who was adopted when he was an infant, at the same age as the other children, and guess what? He’s not. He’s not an ounce overweight. So that illustrates that while they would grow up in the exact same environment these three children were not all generically the same. The two generically similar children turned out to be tremendously overweight. The child who was adopted is not.
