Nicole tells how bariatric surgery has helped her make significant life changes.
MALE VOICE: I was severely over weight at 520 pounds, so I knew something had to change or I wasn’t going to live much longer. And I was at my cardiologist’s office one day for a separate matter and he - - brought it up. He said, “you know, there’s a doctor I know, name Dr. Krahn who’s doing some really nit things with - - band. I think you should go see him because you could stand to lose some weight.” So I made the initial appointment, came over and saw Dr. Krahn and for a while, we had gone back and forth between lab-band or the bypass.
My particular problem was over eating. It wasn’t so much sweets or anything like that, it was just over eating. So, having a lab-band allowed me to control my hunger with the lease amount of surgery or least amount of intervention, I guess. So it was the—to me, it was the wiser choice for the lab-band.
The things I don’t—I use to have to sleep with a C-pat machine for my sleep apnea; I don’t have to do that anymore. I was taking medication for acid reflex, I don’t have to do that anymore. I was taking medication for high cholesterol; I don’t have to do that anymore. Medication for high blood pressure; don’t have to do that anymore. So, I mean, just medically those things are terrific. Plus, the fact that some of the simply things in life that you take for granted; fitting in chairs, you know, fitting in a booth at a restaurant—uhm, walking down an aisle in a store and having someone walking the other way, not feeling that you’re taking up the whole aisle. Buying clothes, I mean, I can buy clothes at a regular department store now, where I sure couldn’t do that before. It’s the best, one of the best that’s happened to me is Dr. Conn and his surgery. It gave me my life back. It really did. Because, I mean, the way I was feeling before surgery, now, I don’t know how long I was going to be around and, uhm, now I don’t have those thoughts anymore.
