MALE VOICE: The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery is a tool in which we provide to the patient portion control and satiety. Meaning that it’s in the category of pure restrictive operation. Remember, portion control means that will help a patient eat smaller meals when they do eat. And satiety means we’re offering them something to help control their hunger between the meals. One of the - - features about the lap-proscopic adjustable gastric band is right in the name. The fact that it is adjustable. This here is a lap-proscopic adjustable gastric band. Technically what we’re doing in this surgery is we’re placing this band around the top of the stomach. It’s connected to some tubing, the tubing then is connected to a port that sits underneath the skin. We can adjust the amount of restriction that a patient gets by putting a needle into the port, in the office with a simple one to two minute procedure. It has a very low complication rate because we’re not cutting the intestine, we’re not cutting the stomach and we’re not rearranging things. We’re simply putting the band around the top of the stomach in a very strategic location and - - in place so it does not move out.
