MALE VOICE: The laparoscopic gastric bypass in an operation which combines restriction with mal-absorption. So technically what we’re doing is, with small incisions through the abdomen and we insert - - and we watch the operation on a camera as we perform it. We cut out a small gastric pouch. Sometimes, some people would say it’s the size of the thumb. So that provides restriction to the patient. It limits the volume of food they’re going to eat. We also divide the small intestine in a proximal location and we bring one end of the intestine to the pouch and we reconnect down below so we have a proximal configuration, but it’s a short intestinal by-pass and what that does is that it provides good resolution of diabetes, it helps the person stay away from sugar, it helps them resolve high triglycerides. That operation gives a relatively short recovery time. The majority of patients leave the hospital within two days. Patients get back to work, usually two to four weeks after that surgery.
