MALE VOICE: We offer two types of Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass on our practice. Laparoscopic proximal gastric bypass without a ring and laparoscopic proximal gastric bypass with a ring. What does it mean to have a ring? A ring, around the gastric pouch, leads to better results. What are the better results? They are; improved weight lost, also, less change in weight regain after surgery. One of the things that happens after gastric bypass is that for the small percentage of patients that regain weight, we know that the connection between the intestine and the pouch dilates open. So, is you would imagine, my hand was the pouch and this is the connection here with the intestine, it opens up so that food falls through easier and the patient looses their sensation of restriction. In the ring gastric bypass, the surgeon will put a ring, and it could be different material, but this ring here is an example and it goes around the gastric pouch. So if this is the connection, this is the pouch here and the ring goes up in this area. It mean that, even if the opening dilates, the ring is there to help give restriction and a feeling of - - for the patient.

While we don’t have solid scientific studies to demonstrate long term success with the ring, there is a good deal of - - information that the ring around the gastric by-pass yields greater weight lost and also longer term weight lost with a less change of weight re-gain.
